REGISTERING WITH THE EMBASSY

The important reasons why American citizens should register themselves at the American Citizens Services Unit in the Consular Section include:

  • This registry information can help Americans replace lost or stolen passports;
  • Ensure that they receive timely information about natural disasters, political unrest, or anything else that could affect their safety;
  • And put them on the mailing list for the Embassy's newsletter and invitations to special events.

The registration information provided by American citizens is added into the Embassy's Warden System. The Warden System, is organized by region throughout Indonesia , and is aided by the volunteer work of "Wardens" who help the Embassy pass along fast-breaking news to other American citizens in their regions.

In general, the duties of Embassy Wardens are not time-consuming but could be vital in time of an emergency. Americans interested in volunteering to become "Wardens" should mark their registration form notifying the Consular Section of their interest.

To register online, go to the Internet-Based Registration System (IBRS) at https://travelregistration.state.gov .  You may also fill out the enclosed form (MS Word) and either fax it or bring it in person to the Consular Section or register at the embassy’s website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov.

We are pleased to announce the availability of a new cell phone Short Message Service (SMS) alert service, which is being offered to American citizens interested in receiving SMS messages on their hand phones when the Embassy issues a new Warden Message. Staying Informed About Events in Indonesia

The US Embassy attempts to disseminate information to the American community in Indonesia whenever there is a credible and specific threat to American citizens or American interests. We also provide guidance of a general nature to assist American citizens living in Indonesia make prudent personal security choices. We do not, however, attempt to provide specific day-to-day updates on demonstration activity, traffic and other disruptions in Jakarta. This is a deliberate choice because we have found that situations in Indonesia develop and change quickly and this sort of information quickly becomes obsolete, often before it is even posted. We also lack the resources to compete with media organizations in providing spot reporting.

In addition to using this web site and contacting the Embassy, we encourage all American citizens to develop and use their personal contacts in the community to learn about the changing situation in Jakarta and to carefully monitor press reports. Two radio stations in particular, Sonora (100.9) and Trijaya (104.75) have regular traffic reports that can be useful tools in evaluating the security situation in a particular part of the city.
