General Information on U.S. Immigration

Immigrant visas (IV), also known as "green cards," allow the holder to relocate to the U.S.  By law, persons who are intending immigrants are ineligible for visitor or student visas.  It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to qualify for the appropriate visa in time to suit travel plans.

IVs are a responsibility of the U.S. Department of State (DOS), Consular Affairs (CA), http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/immigrants_1340.html, undertaken at U.S. embassies overseas.  IVs for employees and family members first require an underlying immigrant petition approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) before any IV processing starts.  The immigrant petition for family members is I-130, for employees I-140 and for fiancés I-129F.

The DOS’ National Visa Center (NVC) handles IV preparations for all immigrant petitions submitted directly to CIS in the U.S. before the IV applicant is seen by appointment in Jakarta.  Only after the applicant has submitted all required documents to NVC will NVC schedule an IV appointment in Jakarta.  Please see http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_1335.html to learn more about NVC processing.

U.S. Embassy Jakarta/CONS/IV handles all IV preparations for those I-130s submitted in Jakarta.
