U.S. EMBASSY WARDEN MESSAGE
March 3 2006
U.S. Embassy Jakarta
U.S. Consulate General Surabaya
Warden Message
The U.S. Embassy informs Americans in Indonesia that a large
demonstration is planned for Sunday March 5 in the area in front of
the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta. The demonstration has been announced
publicly by posters and via Internet. The Embassy urges Americans to
avoid the area near the Embassy and the National Monument on March 5.
The Embassy reminds Americans that additional protests and
demonstrations may occur throughout Indonesia without prior notice or
warning. Even demonstrations and protests intended by their organizers
to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.
Recent demonstrations in Jakarta and elsewhere against U.S. Government
facilities resulted in property damage and injuries to police
officers. The possibility of additional demonstrations remains high.
The Embassy urges American citizens to remain aware of their
surroundings at all times, to avoid the areas of demonstrations and
protests when possible, and to exercise caution if caught in the
vicinity of any demonstrations.
The Embassy reminds all Americans of the need to avoid crowds, to
maintain a low profile, and to be vigilant about security at all
times. The information in the November 18, 2005 Travel Warning for
Indonesia remains valid. All security-related Travel Warnings and
Public Announcements, recent Embassy warden messages, and registration
information are posted on the Embassy’s website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov.
The Embassy is located at Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, No. 4-5,
Jakarta; the 24-hour telephone number is 021-3435-9000. The telephone
