U.S. Embassy Jakarta
U.S. Consulate General Surabaya
Warden Message
September 28, 2005
The U.S. Embassy informs Americans of reports that several large
public demonstrations are planned in Jakarta and possibly other cities
around Indonesia beginning September 28, 2005 to protest impending
fuel price hikes announced by the Government of Indonesia. Most
demonstrations are publicized in advance by the media and protesting
organizations. The Indonesian National Police and Jakarta city
authorities have taken appropriate steps to ensure that demonstrations
remain peaceful. However, any demonstration has the potential to turn
violent.
The Embassy strongly encourages Americans to avoid areas where
demonstrations are taking place. Demonstrations in Jakarta may cause
major traffic disruptions. The Embassy encourages Americans to monitor
local news and to consult with Indonesian friends and colleagues to
ascertain the locations of demonstrations. The areas near the
Presidential Palace and other major government buildings are popular
sites for demonstrations.
The Embassy encourages Americans in Indonesia to register with the
Embassy in Jakarta, the Consulate General in Surabaya, or the Consular
Agent in Bali. Registration may be done on-line at :
