Death of Former Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas Statement by
Ambassador Cameron R. Hume The world will remember Ali Alatas as a determined advocate for peace and stability around the world. He helped broker the historic 1991 Cambodia peace agreement. As a member of the ASEAN Eminent Persons Group, Ali Alatas played a critical role in helping to ensure that democracy and respect for human rights were enshrined in the organization’s Charter. As Indonesia’s special envoy on Burma, he pressed the regime to undertake political reforms and release political prisoners. Indonesians will remember him for his wise stewardship of their country’s place in the world. Ali Alatas helped make Indonesia a leader of the Non-Aligned Movement and a key player in the United Nations. His leadership helped Indonesia manage one of its most difficult challenges—the independence of East Timor. Under President Habibie, Alatas steadily guided Indonesia’s foreign affairs through the critical early days of the country’s democracy. Finally, Americans will remember Ali Alatas as a friend of the United States and a proponent of good relations between our countries. He served on the Board of the American Indonesian Exchange Foundation (AMINEF) and supported the Fulbright Program and other exchange because he knew that people-to-people ties were the foundation of our relationship. Ali Alatas lived his life dedicated to a principle that he expressed best himself: "Only peace based on justice, on a recognition of the equal worth of all human lives, the equal validity of all human aspirations, can become true peace." # # #
