Bahasa Indonesia

Banda Aceh, January 29 U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Cameron R. Hume today handed over nearly $100,000 worth of English language books, computer software, furniture, equipment, and other materials to the Universitas Syiah Kuala (UNSYIAH) Lab School library in Banda Aceh.

The UNSYIAH Lab School, a model high school championed by the U.S. Indonesia Society (USINDO) after the devastating tsunami, opened in July 2007.  The 16 classroom complex was built by donations from American and Indonesian corporations and individuals.  Ambassador Hume attended the July 2007 opening ceremonies, and was so impressed with USINDO and other donors' efforts in the establishment of the school that he was eager to involve the U.S. Embassy in a project to build-up the school’s library.

“Education and public-private partnerships are two of my top priorities for U.S.-Indonesia relations,” the Ambassador said.  “This model school is an excellent example of both.”

The resources for the library were chosen in conjunction with the school’s faculty and administration, and even the students were given the opportunity to suggest books for the library.

In attendance at the ceremony were the school’s faculty, administration and students, as well as local dignitaries and several U.S. Embassy Jakarta and U.S. Consulate Medan officials.  In addition to the Ambassador, speakers included Ms. Syarifah Mardhiah, Principal of UNSYIAH Lab School, Dr. Darni M. Daud, Rector of UNSYIAH, Mrs. Margaret Sullivan of USINDO Washington, and Mr. Drajat Pandjawi, Director of Corporate Affairs of Microsoft, who donated software for the project.
