U.S. Embassy and London School of Public Relations Host
Democracy Video Challenge 2009 Awards Ceremony

Jakarta, March 18 The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and the London School of Public Relations (LSPR) hosted a finalist screening selection event and awards ceremony for the Democracy Video Challenge at the Prof. Djajusman Auditorium at LSPR.  The top three entries from Indonesia were selected from the 10 finalists, and awarded video cameras and internships at Kompas-TV.  These entries will be sent from Indonesia to compete for the grand prize against other countries’ submissions. 

The Democracy Video Challenge is a U.S. State Department-sponsored worldwide competition that asked participants to create short videos that complete the phrase “Democracy is…” The grand prize is an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., New York and Hollywood to meet with U.S. film producers.  The competition received nearly 600 submissions via YouTube from 90 countries, and Indonesia had the highest number of submissions in Asia. 

The judges were U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission John A. Heffern, Mirwan Suwarso (Destiny Films), Cacuk Wibisono (Paradigma Films) and Melissa Karim. Over 200 guests attending, including VIPs from the film and television industry, faculty members from London School of Public Relations, LSPR students and their parents. 

The three wining videos selected were “Democracy is Equal Right” by Fikri Syaukani, “Indonesian Democracy” by Ardelia Angelia and “Democracy and LGBT Rights” by Edith ‘Weddel’. The winning videos were selected on the basis of the strength of the videos message, creativity and originality and production technical quality. The runners up were Arvin Dwiputra Mulyadi, Astri Kartika Sari, Azisah Syamsuddin, Dandy Mauludianto, Dhita Putri, Ivone Leovita and Rionasta Achiel.
