U.S. Ambassador Presents Immunization Merit Badges
to Scouts in West Java

Bahasa Indonesia

Bandung, March 11 U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume visited the Pramuka Scout Camp in Jatinagor, West Java, to present immunization merit badges to Indonesian scouts.  This innovative program to advocate for increased immunization coverage in Indonesia was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Government-funded Millennium Challenge Corporation/Indonesia Immunization Project (MCC/IIP).  The program’s goal is to fully vaccinate all infants by age one under the motto “Lima Imunisasi Lengkap” (five immunizations completed).

The Ambassador was joined by H. Ahmad Heryawan, Governor of West Java Province; Dr. Azrul Azwar, Chairman of PRAMUKA (Indonesian Scouts Organization); and Dr. Hj. Alma Lucy Ati, West Java Provincial Health Officer.

Pramuka is one of several valued civil society organization partners that provide widened support to strengthening the routine immunization program in Indonesia. Other such organizations are: PKK (Family Welfare Movement), Muslimat NU, Aisyiyah, (faith-based organizations), and IBI and IDAI (professional organizations).

A ceremony at the scout camp recognized partners’ contributions and solicited their commitment to continue to work in concert with local health and government officials in a public-private partnership to prevent the spread of vaccine preventable diseases.  The program has focused on prevention of the following diseases: tuberculosis, hepatitis B, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, and measles.

Pramuka’s contribution is especially important because it not only promotes better understanding of immunization throughout the community today, but also prepares the next generation to protect their own children and community in the future.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation/Indonesia Immunization Project (MCC/IIP) is a two year development project administered by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the MCC Threshold Program. The aim of the Project is to assist the Government of Indonesia to increase the national routine immunization coverage rate, as well as to strengthen the national immunization program at central, provincial and district levels.  The Project is scheduled to be completed by March 31, 2009.
