U.S. Ambassador Emphasizes Safe Drinking Water in Schools

Bahasa Indonesia

Jakarta, March 19 U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume opened a new drinking water and hand washing facility at SDN 3 Ancol.  As part of the Water in Schools project, SDN 3 Ancol is the first of six schools in Jakarta that will receive new safe water stations.  A simple water treatment method called “Air RahMat” will be used to ensure a constant supply of safe drinking water.

“The lack of safe water and proper sanitation facilities are a main cause of diarrheal disease,” said Ambassador Hume.  “In fact, it is the second leading cause of death among children under five in Indonesia.”

The other five schools that will benefit from the Water in Schools project are SDN 01 Ancol, SDN 02 Pademangan Barat, SDN 09 Pademangan Timur, SDN 12 Pademangan Barat, and the Floating Library in Kapuk Cengkareng.  Schools in North Jakarta difficult for them to obtain a consistent supply of safe drinking water throughout the day. The Water in Schools project hopes to rectify that problem in order to prevent diarrhea and other water borne diseases caused by contaminated drinking water.

The new facilities were made possible through the cooperation of the Jakarta International School’s (JIS) Helping Hands Club, PT Peduli Freeport, and the Jakarta Free Spirit Running Club.  The Aman Tirta Project, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), managed and coordinated the safe water project.

The U.S. Ambassador’s visit to SDN 3 Ancol was also in coordination with World Water Day which is an effort by the United Nations to raise global awareness to the importance of safe drinking water.  World Water Day is officially observed on March 22, 2009.

Jakarta - Ambassador Cameron Hume sips water with a child at SDN 03 Pagi Ancol in Northern Jakarta where he opened a new drinking station for school children.   The safe water system was made possible through commercial partnerships as part of a larger USAID-Aman Tirta project to bring safe water to Indonesian schools.
