U.S. Delegation to World Ocean’s Conference in Manado
Includes “A-Team” of U.S-based Scientists and Experts

Jakarta, May 6 – The U.S. Government is sending a delegation of more than 40 representatives to participate in the 2009 World Ocean Conference (WOC) scheduled for May 11-15, 2009, in Manado, Indonesia.  Ms. Mary Glacken, Deputy Undersecretary for Oceans and Atmosphere of the Department of Commerce, will lead the delegation, which is comprised of top U.S.-based researchers, scientists, technology experts and educators. 

“I am very excited to have so many outstanding scientists and experts join me in representing the U.S. at the World Ocean Conference and Coral Triangle Initiative Summit in Manado,” U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume said. “We have an ‘A-team’ of ocean experts, drawn from government agencies, higher education institutions and the private sector, who have the expertise to address important scientific issues related to oceans and preserving marine biodiversity.” 

Other delegation members will include California Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Linda S. Adams, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Assistant Administrator Dr. Richard W. Spinrad, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography Dr. Tony Haymet, the Smithsonian Institution’s Sant Chair of Marine Science Dr. Nancy Knowlton, Google, Inc.’s Chief Technology Advocate Michael Jones, and NOAA Chief Scientist Dr. Stephen R. Hammond. 

The United States Government is supporting the Coral Triangle Initiative with a $40 million, five-year program for improving the management of marine and coastal resources in the region.  The U.S. Agency for International Development and the National Oceanic and NOAA, as the U.S. federal agency focused on the conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere, are a key part of this effort, and already partners of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and other Indonesian institutions.

U.S. Delegation Biographies

Mary M. Glackin is the Deputy Undersecretary for Oceans and Atmosphere, appointed on December 2, 2007, and responsible for the day-to-day management of NOAA’s domestic and international operations. Ms. Glackin has been with NOAA for more than 15 years and has received numerous awards. 

Cameron R. Hume presented his credentials as U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia on August 1, 2007.  He is a member of the Foreign Service, rank of Career Minister.  He served as Ambassador to Algeria and South Africa, and as Chargé d’Affaires to Sudan. 

Linda S. Adams, was appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in May 2006 as the first female Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency. As Cal/EPA’s Secretary, Adams oversees the environmental activities and 5,000 employees serving the state’s environmental programs.  Secretary Adams works closely with states, provinces and countries around the world to develop a network of climate initiatives. 

Dr. Richard W. Spinrad is Assistant Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR). He has broad experience in marine science, technology, operations and policy. During his career he has worked in a wide range of positions in government, academia, industry and non-governmental organizations.

Dr. Tony Haymet is the tenth director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. Haymet also serves as University of California's (UC) San Diego's vice chancellor for marine sciences and dean of the Graduate School of Marine Sciences, and is a professor of oceanography at Scripps. Dr. Haymet is a highly distinguished researcher with more than 160 peer-reviewed scientific articles. 

Dr. Nancy Knowlton is the Sant Chair of Marine Science of the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History and renowned marine biologist. She is an adjunct professor of marine biology at University of California, San Diego and Sant Chair for Marine Science at the National Museum of Natural History. Dr. Knowlton has performed extensive research on the ecology, evolution and conservation of coral reef organisms. 

Michael Jones is the Chief Technology Advocate of Google. He is charged with advancing the technology to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. He travels the globe to meet and speak with governments, businesses, partners and customers in order to advance Google's mission and technology. 

Dr. Stephen R. Hammond is the Chief Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Ocean Exploration and Research Program and Division Leader for the Ocean Environment Research Division of NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory. Dr. Hammond has been involved in marine geophysics and submarine volcanic and hydrothermal research for more than 40 years.
