Local Governments Work to Improve Transparency and Accountability

Bahasa Indonesia

JAKARTA
-- A coordinated effort between the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Government of Indonesia and 69 local governments in nine provinces of Indonesia has helped to promote participatory, effective and accountable local governance.

Deputy Minister Bambang Sutedjo cited the program as an example of “best practices” in action, during a meeting with USAID representatives on the Local Governance Supoprt Program (LGSP)’s achievements.

Today these local governments can speak of better planning, finance and budgeting capabilities and better public service delivery.  They can be proud of better cooperation among the executive and legislative branches within their community and with civil society and their residents. And they can talk honestly of improved transparency and accountability.

USAID, through its four-year $62 million Local Governance Support Program, provided support and training to more than 77,000 participants from government, legislative councils and private citizens. LGSP helped to engage tens of thousands of residents in local government through public hearings, call-in radio shows, text messaging and the like; and enhanced the work of 212 civil society organizations that monitor local government budgets and performance. It increased the capability of civil society networks to advocate for continued progress in good governance and spurred the formation of networks of reformers across Indonesia.
