Statement by Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt
on  the Recent Announcement by the Government of Indonesia Regarding
Cooperation on Pandemic Preparedness

March 28, 2007

Bahasa Indonesia

We welcome the Government of Indonesia’s announcement that it will immediately resume the sharing of influenza virus samples. This is a positive step forward in international cooperation and in our ability as a global community to prepare for an influenza pandemic.

Responding to a pandemic will demand the cooperation of the world community, as no nation can go it alone. If a country is to protect its own people, it must work together with other nations to protect the people of the world.

The U.S. Government remains committed to working with the World Health Organization, the private sector and international partners to broaden the production and distribution of safe and effective influenza vaccines.
