U.S. and Australia Conduct Human Rights Training
With the Indonesian National Police

[Bahasa Indonesia]

The U.S. and Australia conducted a Senior Police Leadership Seminar on Human Rights for the Indonesian National Police (INP) in Banda Aceh, November 14-16. Twelve senior Aceh police officers attended the seminar, designed to engage command level officers on the importance of human rights issues and initiatives for the people of Aceh as part of the transition under the Helsinki Agreement.

Taught by staff from the U.S. Department of Justice International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Project (ICITAP) and an Australian human rights expert, this course constituted the first program in the ICITAP Aceh Transformation and Restoration Project.

The ICITAP Aceh Transformation and Restoration Project is one of twelve USDOJ/ICITAP projects funded by the U.S. State Department International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau as part of the United States continuing commitment to working with Indonesia and INP to develop a professional and responsive law enforcement organization.

ICITAP provides long-term international law enforcement organizational development assistance for emerging democracies, and has been in Indonesia since 2000. ICITAP projects focus on developing democratic law enforcement structures, systems and procedures, while simultaneously building operational capacity.

For more information, contact Gerald H. Heuett Jr., Senior Law Enforcement Advisor USDOJ/CRM/ICITAP at (021) 3435-9503.
