SECURITY MESSAGE TO U.S. CITIZENS: Demonstration in Medan; U.S. Embassy Jakarta Open for Business Sep. 18, 2012

The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta has been informed that a demonstration of approximately 100 people has started in Medan, today, Tuesday, September 18 near the American Presence Post. Police were expecting approximately 250 people.  Approximately 150 police will be present during the demonstration.  There are no demonstrations scheduled for today in Jakarta.  As a precaution, local authorities have stationed an increased number of local police outside of the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta today. The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta is still open for regular business as usual. We advise, as always, that people should avoid large crowds and other gatherings that might turn violent. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates, if needed.

U.S. citizens living and traveling in Indonesia are urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and update their contact information with the U.S. Embassy Jakarta, U.S. Consulate General Surabaya, U.S. Consulate Medan or U.S. Consular Agency Bali.  Enrolling facilitates the U.S. Mission’s contact with U.S. citizens in emergencies, and may be done online and in advance of travel.  Information on enrolling with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program can be found at the U.S. Department of State’s Consular Affairs website at http://step.state.gov and at the Embassy’s website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov, where you can also find recent Embassy messages to public.
